All-Star BBC Advert Becomes Internet Hit

According to a report on Digital Spy, a television advert for BBC Radio 2 featuring Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder and Keith Moon is proving an internet hit.
The movie combines footage of the stars to create the appearace of a generation-spanning super band. It has been posted on popular Elvis fan sites as well as being viewed more than 50,000 times on YouTube.

The 'King' is seen introducing stars including Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Page, Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow and, as backing singers, the Sugababes.

The clips, taken from DVDs, YouTube and the corporation's library, were merged into footage of Presley's Aloha From Hawaii show.

Rochelle Fox, Radio 2's head of marketing, said it had received a good reception. "We've had a fantastic response from all over the world," she explained. "We've had people emailing and asking when it will next be on so they can watch it, which is quite unusual for a promotional trailer.

"It's not shocking or salacious but it's really heartwarming. I hope people will look at it and realise that the station is not just for their dads."

It is intended to demonstrate the variety of music played on the channel.

Coronation Street Set Could Be Moved

According to a report on Digital Spy, the whole Coronation Street set may have to move to a different location under plans by ITV.
The whole Coronation Street set may have to be moved under ITV plans for a move to a different location.

Plans to relocate Granada studios to nearby Salford may also mean the soap's famous site has to be transferred, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The change would mean more than 49,000 bricks, 6,500 slates and the street's legendary cobbles would have to be moved across the city, says the paper.

A source at the soap explained the reasoning behind the proposals. He said: "There are more than 800 people working in and around the Granada studios and the buildings they are housed in are now getting on for half a century old and are in need of a revamp."

Selling its current 21 acre site and moving to a cheaper location would also bring a funding boost to the channel.

A spokeswoman for the show said: "Our discussions with both Manchester and Salford city councils are ongoing."

Michael Aspel turns down 'Countdown' role

According to a report on Digital Spy, Michael Aspel has revealed that he has turned down the opportunity to host Countdown.
The TV presenter claims he did not feel right taking over the prestigious role, citing Richard Whiteley's character as the reason.

He said: "I was just offered the job but said no. It was nice to be asked but the success of the show was Richard Whiteley with his loud ties and bad jokes, and it didn't need a laid-back presenter like me."

Aspel also voiced his opinion on the possibility of Stephen Fry taking the role, commenting: "I don't think Stephen Fry should do it - he's beyond that." He suggested Martin Jarvis and Gyles Brandreth as two plausible competitors.

TV Quiz Calls Face Charges Probe

According to BBC News, premium-rate phone lines to televised quiz shows will be investigated by regulators because of concerns that callers could be paying too much.
The review by Icstis, the body that regulates premium-rate phone numbers, comes after a rise in the number of complaints about such services.
Even if unsuccessful, a phone call to such shows can cost some 75 pence.
Icstis wants greater transparency so callers know how much they are paying, and the likelihood of winning a prize.
Many people were unaware that even if their call are unsuccessful they would still be charged, and each time they redial they would be charged again, said an Icstis spokesperson.

Details About The Royle Family – The Queen Of Sheba Revealed!

The BBC Press Office has revealed more information about the storyline for the new 'The Royle Family' one-off special 'The Queen Of Sheba' (contains spoilers!):
The Royle Family – The Queen Of Sheba Unplaced Day and time to be confirmed BBC ONE

It has been nearly seven years since the nation's second most prestigious family sat around the television with a brew and now they are back to grace viewers with their presence for a one-off, hour-long special episode – but how has time changed them?

Has Jim turned into a hard-working, sensitive soul concerned only with the welfare of others? Has Barbara swapped her leggings for a Louis Vuitton bag? Has Dave taken charge of Denise and become the loquacious entrepreneur we all knew was inside him? Has Denise got more on her mind than her nails and watching Jerry Springer? Has Baby David grown up into an A-grade mini genius? Has our Antony jetted off to travel the world and experience new cultures? Has Nana got herself a toyboy and has the hapless Cheryl lost weight and become a footballer's wife?

Well, they have moved with the times but, luckily, not too far from that comfy old sofa and the fag-filled ashtray. The TV is bigger and better with more channels, of course, and although much remains the same one thing has, indeed, changed in the Royle household – Nana has moved in and taken up residence with the dining room as her boudoir.

With Dave reading her saucy books to her and Denise doing her nails, Nana is the centre of attention which Jim is happy to grumble about, especially when she steals his batteries from his remote control for her fan, leaving him forced to watch Location, Location, Location. However, Nana is too busy stirring up family renditions of Johnny Cash songs to notice.

Jim is still picking his nose and setting the world to rights from his armchair throne whilst ranting about how much Noel Edmonds and Graham Norton are on the TV; and when not sneaking off to The Feathers for a few sneaky halves, he is shamelessly making use of the newly installed stairlift. Barbara, when not doing her mam's hair or putting the kettle on, is still putting up with Jim's tantrums and coarse habits but is considering being fully laminated throughout – a prospect that Jim finds appalling.

Denise is pregnant again, sporting some fancy hair extensions and has mastered the use of Sky+ so that she can keep up with Trisha, and Dave is still as verbally dextrous as ever – well, not really, but he's still happy to make the tea. Baby David is now Little David and is a carbon copy of his dad, complete with matching leather jacket. And although his school thought he had attention deficit disorder, it turns out he just couldn't be bothered concentrating, much to everyone's relief.

Our Antony has grown up, is now a suited and booted business man, and pops in on his way to a conference in Milton Keynes. Jim finds his son's success immensely useful for cadging the odd £50.

Meanwhile, Cheryl is trying out some new diets and is now looking for love with an ad in the local lonely hearts column – "male aged any....own vehicle not necessary as father will drop off and pick up" – and brings her new beaux back to the Royle house to meet everyone.

But, as always with the family, the most important order of the day is what's on the telly and who is making the tea...

Jim is played by Ricky Tomlinson, Barbara by Sue Johnston, Denise by Caroline Aherne, Dave by Craig Cash, Little David by Harry Cash, Antony by Ralf Little, Cheryl by Jessica Stevenson and Nana by Liz Smith.

It looks like the new 'The Royle Family' one-off special 'The Queen Of Sheba' will be shown on BBC 1 between Saturday 28th October 2006 and Friday 3rd November 2006. According to rumours, The Royle Family – The Queen Of Sheba will be shown on Sunday 29th October 2006 at 9pm on BBC1.

Amazon.co.uk have put up a picture of the front cover of the 'The Royle Family - The Queen Of Sheba' DVD, which shows what the cast look like now. You can view it at http://www.amazon.co.uk. ITV DVD will be releasing the DVD as Granada/ITV Productions make The Royle Family.

Also, according to reports on the Digital Spy message boards, Emma isn't in this episode, neither is Darren, but the rest of the regulars, like Mary and Joe, are in it. This special also introduces Antony Royle's son.

Inventor's bright idea for perfect boiled egg

According to the news agency Reuters, a British inventor claims to have cracked the age-old problem of how to boil the perfect egg.
Simon Rhymes has devised a machine that uses powerful light bulbs instead of boiling water to cook the egg.

The gadget, which looks like a glass cafetiere, does the job in six minutes and then chops off the top to allow dipping with toast "soldiers".

Rhymes, 23, said he came up with the idea because he found it hard to cook an egg the traditional way.

"Many people are confused," the product design student told BBC radio on Wednesday. "This simply uses four 500-watt bulbs to heat the egg directly."

Rhymes, from Wiltshire, said he has secured a patent and is in talks with manufacturers to mass-produce the machine.

Chocolate 'skyscraper' sets record

According to the news agency ITN, a French chef has set a new record in New York for the world's tallest sculpture made out of chocolate.
Made out of pure dark chocolate, Hyatt chef Alain Roby's 20ft 8ins (6.4m) creation took over 30 hours to build.

Weighing in at a whopping 2,285lbs (1036.46kgs) of chocolate, the "skyscraper" would not look out of place in New York's famous skyline.

The amazing choccie creations constructed for the record are on display in the Big Apple's famous midtown toy store, FAO Schwarz.

Mr Roby, who works at a Hyatt hotel in Chicago, said it is not a real replica of any particular building.

He said: "There is a little bit of the Rockefeller Center, a little bit of the Empire (State Building) and a little bit of the Chrysler Building so everything is a little bit mixed together and my goal was really to reach the height."

A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to measure the entries.

Sky moves into UGC market with Current TV

According to Digital Spy, Sky has done a deal with former US vice-president Al Gore to broadcast a UK version of the user-generated channel Current TV.
Gore, who lost the 2000 US presidential election to George W Bush, launched the US version of the channel with business partner Joel Hyatt in August 2005.

Current TV's output includes non-fiction programmes, or "pods", aimed at 18-to-34-year-old Internet-savvy viewers.

Gore and Sky chief executive James Murdoch hope to use the UK channel to democratise the broadcast medium by allowing viewers to produce and broadcast their own short films.

Gore said: "We are grateful to be working with BSkyB in our first international venture. This is a big step in fulfilling Current's mission of sparking a global conversation among young adults."

Viewers send their videos to the http://www.current.tv web site for selection for the channel. The videos, which make up 30% of Current TV's US schedule, cover technology, the environment, fashion or politics. The channel, which calls itself "the TV network created by the people who watch it", reaches nearly 30 million homes in the US via DirecTV, Comcast and TimeWarner Cable.

In the UK it will reach 8.2 million households when it launches in a few months. The channel confirmed the content would be aimed at a UK audience, but that it would also use videos from contributors around the world.

Gore added: "Bringing our viewer created content model to the UK and Ireland will give millions of young viewers the opportunity to not only watch, but also to create, television programming that is relevant to them."

Earlier this year the channel signed with Sony, Toyota and L'Oreal to enlist viewers to produce the brands' commercials in the first user-generated ads deal.

According to Digital Spy, Aardman Animations has been working on a new campaign for Digital UK, the company created by the government to educate the public on the switchover to digital TV.
The "Why wait?" campaign, featuring robot character 'Digit Al' voiced by Little Britain star Matt Lucas, will run across all commercial channels, with trails on BBC One and BBC Two, from this Saturday.

Top Gear Resumes Filming / Richard Hammond's Crash To Be Shown On TV

According to Digital Spy, filming for Top Gear has resumed as Richard Hammond continues to recover in hospital from his huge crash.
Producers had put work on a new series on hold while the presenter battled for his life, but have now apparently given the go-ahead for work to continue.

Co-host Jeremy Clarkson was seen on-location at a track at Surrey's Dunsfold Park Aerodrome, testing a Lotus Europa.

Hammond, who endured serious brain injury when he flipped over in a jet-powered Vampire dragster, is said to be delighted that filming has started again.

The new series was set to begin on Sunday but will still be delayed and no new broadcast date has yet been given.
Source - http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds37830.html.

Also, according to Sky News, it has been reported that the high-speed crash that nearly killed Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is to be shown on television.
BBC bosses are said to be planning a special programme about the smash. Hammond - nicknamed Hamster - is set to fully recover from "significant" brain injuries sustained when the jet-powered car flipped and crashed during a stunt for Top Gear.

The Beeb will now wait until the 36-year-old is fully recovered - set to be within six months - before confirming the project.

Friends of Hamster believe he will agree to the show.

A source told The Daily Mirror: "The aim is not to be gruesome but to show all the preparations.

"Then we'll look at what went wrong and perhaps learn lessons."

Peter Pan sequel sends Wendy back to Neverland

According to the news agency Reuters, London's Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and children's author Geraldine McCaughrean are to release an official sequel to the classic children's book "Peter Pan", called "Peter Pan in Scarlet".
"Something is wrong in Neverland, gentlemen," Wendy said. "And that is why we must go back."

So ends the opening chapter of the official sequel to the children's classic "Peter Pan", kicking off a whole new set of adventures for Wendy and friends as they meet the mischievous Pan as well as pirates, animals, witches and fairies.

Children's author Geraldine McCaughrean won a competition to write the follow-up to J.M. Barrie's work, and with the weight of expectation building ever since she knows how J.K. Rowling must feel with each new Harry Potter release.

"If I'd known it would be this big I would have cared about it much more in the first place, but luckily I didn't," McCaughrean said in an interview, when asked about the publicity surrounding the publication of "Peter Pan in Scarlet".

As with the hugely successful Potter series, details of the book have been shrouded in secrecy ahead of publication on Thursday, and journalists had to sign a letter agreeing not to disclose its contents before they could receive a review copy.

But London's Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, which has owned the copyright to Barrie's original "Peter Pan" story since 1929, has given a few hints.

The sequel is set in 1926, and Michael, one of the children in the original, died in World War One. The others are grown up and troublesome dreams are leaking out of Neverland.

Wendy, now a sensible wife and mother, returns to Neverland where she bumps into Tinker Bell, among others.

Tootles is a judge and Slightly is now titled "The Honourable". Along with John and the Twins they meet in a smoke-filled gentlemen's club off Piccadilly to discuss the strange dreams invading their sleep.

As for the villainous Captain Hook, the publisher is remaining tight-lipped.

"Well, what can we say but his spirit is still stalking Neverland?"
Geraldine McCaughrean also plans a version of "Peter Pan" the play, as well as a younger version of "Peter Pan in Scarlet".

FremantleMedia Strikes It Lucky With Interactive DVD

According to FremantleMedia's official website, Fremantle Home Entertainment (FHE), the home entertainment division of FremantleMedia, one of the largest international creators and producers of programme brands in the world, today announced it has inked a deal with DDS Media to produce and create a Strike It Lucky interactive DVD game based on the hugely popular TV show.
The DVD, which will be marketed and sold by FHE, includes a raft of exclusive and exciting features including direct involvement from Michael Barrymore, the original host of the TV show. Mr Barrymore has been fully involved in the production of the Strike It Lucky interactive DVD and brings this classic gameshow back to life by playing host once again, offering guidance and encouragement to players throughout each of the levels.

Michael Barrymore commented: “Strike It Lucky has certainly given me some of the best moments of my career and I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to not only be part of the DVD game version, but also proud to see this iconic gameshow back on the screen!”

The Strike It Lucky interactive DVD is scheduled to hit all good retailers including HMV, Woolworths and WH Smiths, from early November. Additional features include both single and multi-player functions and the opportunity for players to win a jack-pot prize at the end of the game.

Strike It Lucky was first broadcast in 1986 on ITV and ran until 1999. The classic gameshow attracted, at its height, over 17 million viewers. Strike It Lucky is part of FremantleMedia’s extensive library of classic gameshows which includes The Price Is Right, Family Fortunes and Blockbusters.
You can read the whole press release at http://www.fremantlemedia.com/page.asp?partid=556.

I'm glad they're calling the interactive DVD 'Strike It Lucky', for some reason, 'Strike It Lucky' didn't sound as good when it was renamed to 'Strike It Rich' in the 1990's.

Ofcom will launch a full inquiry following an outcry sparked by Financial Mail's reports on the money-spinning programmes.

The media regulator started preparatory work a week ago and aims to report by the end of the year. Recommendations will come into effect early in 2007. The Gambling Commission is already looking into the shows.

Programmes such as ITV's The Mint rely on audiences calling in on premium-rate phone lines to answer simple questions. ITV expects to make about £20m profit from the shows, with most of the money coming from callers who failed to get through to the studio.

Channel 4 and Five run similar programmes and C4 last week apologised for using staff to pose as prizewinners on its Quiz Call show. Another firm, Big Game TV, is waiting to hear whether it will be prosecuted for fraud, which it strongly denies.

An Ofcom source said: 'We have noticed a significant increase in complaints.' Ofcom has had 500 complaints about quiz channels since April and believes the number will double by the end of the year.

The inquiry could force quiz show hosts to come clean about the odds of winning a game and how many phone calls it takes to get through to the show, say Ofcom sources.

CITV Back to Two Hours Daily On ITV1

According to reports, CITV on ITV1 returns to being 2 hours long from 3 to 5pm from tomorrow (2nd October 2006), with the 4pm - 5pm timeslot being used to repeat double episodes of My Parents Are Aliens.

Wonder if the real reason why ITV1 are putting CITV back on for two hours every weekday again is because of the recent Ofcom ruling, or that because October - December is the peak time for toy advertising on television and ITV want their share though?

Warmest September on record

Britain looks to have experienced the warmest September on record, with average temperatures beating the 14.7 degrees Celsius (58.5 Fahrenheit) recorded in 1949, the Meteorological Office said on Sunday, reports the news agency Reuters.
"It certainly looks like the record has been broken," a Met Office spokesman said.

Final confirmation is not expected until Monday, but temperatures for the month up to Friday morning had reached an average of 15.4C, 3.1 degrees Celsius above the long-term average.

Minimum night-time temperatures, at 11.5C, also look likely to have passed the previous September record of 10.6C, set in 1949.

The year has already seen other weather records broken as Britain sweltered in a heatwave over the summer.
